The In-Laws’ Grand Adventures: Bucharest Edition - Part One

Some trips stick with you not just because of where you go, but who you share them with. This one was a bit of both. Four of us – two couples – setting off on an adventure, not just as mates but as family too, since our kids are married to each other. A chance to explore a new city, share great food, and make new memories.

Getting to Bucharest

We were glad to have chosen to take advantage of the Escape Lounge at Manchester Airport. This made for a relaxed start, sitting on comfy sofas eating from a good selection of hot and cold food as well as soft and alcoholic drinks and a good selection of teas and coffees.

After a somewhat full and noisy Ryanair flight we landed in Bucharest late on a Tuesday evening. We had a private taxi waiting for us as part of our holiday package, so getting to our hotel was straightforward.

Although it was dark, our driver pointed out some of the city’s landmarks. As we drove in, we passed King Mihai I Park (formerly Herăstrău Park), the biggest green space in Bucharest, with a huge lake in the middle. Not far from there, we spotted the Arcul de Triumf (Triumphal Arch), which looks a lot like the one in Paris and was built to celebrate Romania’s independence.  Also along the road (Șoseaua Kiseleff), we got a glimpse of some of Bucharest’s grand old buildings and tree-lined streets before heading into the heart of the city.

Hotel Capitol was our base for the trip. A grand old European-style building with smart modern facilities in the rooms. Right on the edge of the Old Town, it was the perfect spot for exploring.

 Late-Night Scran at Noa

After checking in, hunger got the better of us, so we headed out in search of food. We ended up at Noa, a stylish steakhouse that was still serving, even though it was getting late. The staff let us know the kitchen was closing soon, so we ordered quickly but never felt rushed.

And the food? Incredible. Beef noodles, juicy steak, ribs so tender they fell apart, crispy chips; all washed down with local beer for the lads and a glass of rosé for the women . It was the perfect way to start – great food, friendly service, and plenty of laughs.

Roaming the Old Town

Next morning, we were up and out, ready to explore. First stop: Bucharest’s famous Old Town. Cobbled streets, grand old buildings, and a brilliant mix of history and modern life. We wandered through little alleys, admiring the architecture, peeking into tiny, ornate churches and bustling cafés, just soaking up the atmosphere.

HELPFUL HINTS

Other transport options include Uber or Bolt, or there is a shuttle bus for the equivalent of about £2. Locals and seasoned Romanian travellers favour Bolt over Uber as there is more availability. Download the app in advance and don’t risk the unofficial private taxis.

(Next up: Our first full day in Bucharest, local sights, and more cracking food!)
